Delegate Like A Pro

Have you ever thought this:

“It will just be faster to do it myself.”


“But they won’t do it the right way!”

Yup - we’ve all been there.

But - here’s the thing: delegating effectively is critical if you want to grow your studio business.


After a certain point it is detrimental to both you, and your business, to have a single person be 100% responsible for every aspect of your operations. 

And, I get that finding the right people and trusting them with your business can feel risky.

The key is to hire people to to the jobs you don't want to do (or are not very good at). But know this: there will be some responsibilities that always fall on your shoulders as the studio owner.

But to delegate well means investing in having the right people around you. Building a well functioning team to operate your business or help you operate your business relies on trust, support and communication.

And, clear communication is so vital!


Don’t make any assumptions about what your staff know or should know. To avoid frustration be very (very) specific about what you want them to do and when you want them to do it!

As the leader of the team, define what you are looking for your team to achieve and clearly communicate this when they are hired and then frequently on a regular basis - during team meetings for example. 

Putting responsibilities in writing is also helpful, use checklists or task lists to help your team stay organized and on top of their responsibilities. And, be clear about what “done” looks like!

It is likely that you will need to provide training to every single one of your staff members or team . And that training should span days (not hours!). Use your checklists during this training and document of all the points you would like to share when onboarding a new staff member so you can use them again in the future.

Finally, ensure that your team is properly rewarded. Don’t expect your staff to work for free!

Top tips when delegating:

  • Check in on a regular basis - for ongoing tasks make sure your team has everything they need to complete their task

  • Expect questions and mis-steps - this is part of learning!

Avoid micromanaging (or fake-delegating!)

Remember, adjustments take time. The philosophy of "if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself" WILL eventually lead to either burnout or stagnant growth... and no one wants that!

Who Are Your People?

It’s not wrong, but not entirely accurate either…

(To me, it sounds exhausting actually!)

While it might seem that industry successes are unstoppable pioneers (at least that’s what their instagram feed will have you thinking) the reality is that there is a team behind them pushing them, or pulling them to the top.

Now, don’t misunderstand me - I have MEGA respect for anyone who takes the leap into business ownership. It takes courage, purpose and ambition.

And while successful enterprises may be driven forward by a single leader, that person isn’t usually completely alone. 

As an entrepreneur in the wellness and fitness world (or any business), you need people around you.

People at the end of the phone, people who you can take a walk with or meet over coffee. A support network of co-workers, industry peers, business partners, spouses, family, friends and connections who can bounce idea off of. People who champion your efforts, cheer you along and help you work through challenges.

These people also help to keep you accountable, raise concerns that you (the entrepreneur) may have overlooked and give you honest (but necessary) feedback.

Maybe they ask questions, make you think… and share a new perspective.

Hopefully some of your people have industry experience, understand your business and give you valuable tips about what works…and what doesn’t. These people are the bomb ;)

Regardless of who you have around you. You need a support network.

Business thrives on collaboration, networks and partnerships.

And so do you.

More than business growth, I’ve experienced so much personal growth from connecting with people who I respect, who I can learn from and who I think would be good people to be around. 

They say you are the average of the five people you surround yourself with most - maybe this is true…maybe not - but people DO inspire you and influence you in SO many ways.

Finding the right people to join you on this journey is invigorating personally and professionally.

Industry Insight: PMA Conference 2017

I recently returned from the PMA Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, CA. If you didn’t catch the short video I posted on Facebook and Instagram, you can click play below and check out the highlights!


It was a busy (and very fun) few days catching up with pilates pro’s who have been attending the conference for years, and others who were joining us for the first time. There were interesting and insightful workshops on so many pilates related topics that I left inspired by, and grateful for, this amazingly talented community.


On the flight home, I finally was able to catch my breath and reflect on what made these few days so incredible. I came to the following collection of thoughts:


You Make A Difference

Whether you are working with clients, teaching other teachers or just moving because you want to, you ARE making the world a better place. When you make one person feel good, you become a link in the chain of kindness that connects us all.

Blake Beltram from MindBodyOnline reminded us all of this in his keynote speech when he said “ you’re strengthening the core of your clients’ soul and stretching more than their muscles - you’re stretching their capabilities”. 

In your marketing, if you aren't talking about this, you should be. Your impact doesn't just take place during that 60 minute session - there is SO much more to it than that. (Check out this article: Your Brand Is Your Super Power, or this one: It's Pretty Awesome (that thing you do))


You Are A Part Of A Very Special Community

When you are working alone or in a small studio, it is easy to feel isolated. When you take the opportunity to participate and attend conferences for your industry, you experience firsthand the breadth and depth of who we collectively are. Making new connections is every bit as important as what we learn at these events. Perhaps even, by making new connections we are able to learn more! Together, we are this incredible community of movement innovators with real purpose. When we get together in a room - sparks fly!


You Are Going Places

Every year I am blown away by the talent and knowledge within our industry. From the new research studies that were presented to the lively discussions during break-out sessions. The workshops I was able to attend this year highlighted just how intelligent and smart our community is and how we continue to look for more ways to learn and grow. Cheers to that!

Above all, my favorite part of the conference was the coffee and connect series where we chatted over coffee about all things pilates and business related, from hiring new teachers, building new websites, getting new clients and what the Pilates In America study really told us.

Learn From A Fellow Studio Owner

This is the first in a series of articles where I ask successful wellness professionals to reflect on their experience of running a business in the boutique fitness world. I hope you are inspired by their journey, their insight and how unique each business really is!

Lisa Jones is a studio owner in NYC ( who has been a part of the Pilates and fitness world for over 20 years. She is also a certified health coach and offers her clients a very personalized program to help them achieve well-being. In the questions below, she shares insight into the risks she took along the way, her wisdom on how she finds balance and how she has built her business her way. Enjoy the read!

When did you start your business?

I began training private clients in their homes my first year of teaching, and soon after began renting private studio space by the hour, as well, in addition to working full time at studio and gym jobs.  I did this for nine years, gradually bringing my private client business to the point where it made more sense—financially and professionally--to leave my job and rent my own space.  This was in 2009, at the height of the financial crisis, so I was able to negotiate good prices on my rent and pilates equipment.  It was a risk to venture out on my own during this time, but I felt confident that the strength of my client base and reputation would carry me further than relying on an employer.  Thankfully, I was right, and was booked to capacity by the end of my first year in business.

Where are you located?

I have a beautiful private studio in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan.  

How many hours/week do you teach?

Currently between 28-35 hours per week, but I have had periods where I have taught 40+ client hours per week.  My ideal is 28 hours per week.  And I make sure to take at least two consecutive weeks off each year to recharge.

How many teachers teach in your studio?

It’s just me.  The majority of my clientele are high-level professionals, creatives, and celebrities, and they appreciate the privacy.  I feel that offering a truly private studio is an important part of my business identity—there is definitely a market for this kind of service!---but it does make it difficult to grow the business in a way that keeps everybody happy, myself included. 

What is the biggest lesson you have learnt as a business owner?

That the time spent outside of your business can be the most valuable investment in your business.  It took me a while to get comfortable with leaving the studio and not focusing solely on training clients.  Once I was able to let go of the numbers, so to speak, I was able to spend time and energy on professional development and networking, extended vacation time, and pursuing hobbies and interests that had fallen by the wayside.  This shift towards balance enhanced me both personally and professionally, and enabled me to bring more energy and ideas to my business, teaching, and client relationships.  

Biggest challenge to date?

The building my studio is housed in was recently sold to developers, and all of us current tenants must relocate our businesses.  Facing the current NYC real estate market, taking on the incredibly time-consuming task of finding a new space, and leaving the space I have put so much time, energy, and love into, is both heartbreaking and exhausting.  This is definitely the greatest professional challenge I have faced as a pilates instructor/studio owner.  

What do you love most about what you do?

I love my clients.  They are interesting, intelligent, accomplished people who bring a lot of focus and effort towards our sessions.  It’s a joy to teach and engage with them each day.  Some days are better than others, of course, but overall I feel incredibly lucky to work with the people I do.

What skills or actions are most important to running your business successfully?

Customer service and client relationships are the most important aspects of my business.  I am a strong teacher, but I am very aware that my clients are here for more than a great workout:  they enjoy the personal attention, the ambience of the studio, and my personality as well.  Staying organized and on top of every detail is an important behind-the-scenes part of my job.  My systems are very simple, freeing me to put most of my time and energy into working with clients.  

What is in your future?

First I have to find a new home for the studio.  It’s difficult for me to see beyond this challenge right now.  But when I do get glimpses of the future, I see perhaps opening and staffing a more commercial studio or two and transitioning into the role of studio owner, keeping my private studio as an office and place to train my VIP clients, but perhaps taking that down to three days a week.  I would like to increase revenue and gradually decrease the amount of hours I spend working.

Top tip for those looking to start a business like yours?

Be careful to only train the type of person you actually enjoy.  You will be spending a lot of time with these people, in close quarters, with few (if any) distractions.  They will demand all of your energy, attention, and focus...which is easy to give to people whose company you genuinely enjoy!  Remember that there is a very fine line between sharing yourself and stealing focus.  With a private studio, it is always about your clients, never about you.  Clients will most likely be super-loyal and sing your praises to everyone they know, and they will appreciate what you offer them.  But you must be OK with being the smallest person in the room. :)

Are You Taking Care Of The Most Important Asset In Your Business?

One of the most important things we can do for ourselves, our clients and our business is to take care of ourselves.

Take care of our health

Take care of our mind

Nurture our drive, passion and potential.

Filling every second to the brim gives us no time to reflect, be grateful and allow our creative minds to wander.

Everyone has a different way to find their center.

For you, maybe it involves movement, or writing, or drawing or cooking.

Whatever it is, these moments are what allows you to recharge and be inspired in your life.

As a business owner that spends a ton of time focused on the wellbeing and needs of others, you especially need this special time.


Don’t wait until tomorrow. 


Burnout is real.


It starts slowly with the gradual demise of enthusiasm for teaching and helping clients, then begins the questioning; why am I doing this? Is this giving me what I need? Will I be successful? 

What I see, is not, as you might expect, some sort of boredom with the method. The love and enthusiasm for movement is there, just as it always was. 

It’s just been buried beneath too many days of doing the doing.

Think back to the early days of your career, what were you most excited by?

What do you LOVE about what you do? 

What can you do to regain some of THAT?

What can you do today to feel the way you want to feel in your business?

Because, if you are enthusiastic about what you do, then that is contagious to others.

And, if you are not enthusiastic, that too is contagious.
